On May 21, 2018, Governor Kay Ivey signed House Bill 83 (HB83), the Veterans Employment Act, formerly known as the Heroes for Hire Tax Credit Act of 2012.
According to the Office of the Governor’s press release posted on May 21, 2018, “The Veterans Employment Act, sponsored by Rep. Connie Rowe, gives a tax credit to small businesses that hire unemployed veterans.”
This new bill allows certain small businesses to qualify for a $1,000 tax credit for hiring an unemployed veteran regardless of when the veteran was honorably discharged from active service. If the employer qualifies, then the tax credit may be given for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2018.
